The community is invited to join local officials, residents, and community partners for the official ribbon cutting ceremony of Dr. Charles Gillespie Memorial Park, a brand-new pocket park designed to bring art, connection, and vibrancy to the heart of Bloomsburg.
The celebration will take place on Friday, June 6 at 5:00pm at 110 W. Main Street. The event will feature brief remarks from community leaders, information on upcoming events and the process for community groups to utilize the park, music, a photo booth and information tables from local youth organizations and their fundraisers.
“Gillespie Park was born out of community conversations that began more than 15 years ago regarding Downtown Bloomsburg and opportunities to add vibrancy and activity,” said Rich Kisner, Community Strategies Group Executive Director. “Right off the bat it creates a place for community groups like Downtown Bloomsburg Inc. to deliver a variety of seasonal activities for the community. As we continue to add elements to the park, it will become a place for neighbors to meet, artists to find inspiration, and for all of us to enjoy a beautiful downtown atmosphere. It’s another step toward building a more connected and welcoming Bloomsburg.”
Dr. Charles Gillespie Park was developed by Community Strategies Group (CSG) with a Parks And Greenways grant from Pennsylvania DCED, and private contributions from local partners like its namesake, Dr. Charles Gillespie. “I love this town. The people in it, its history, and the town’s potential for the future,” said Dr. Gillespie. “In Bloomsburg, one unique person can make a positive difference.”
CSG plans to continue adding beautification and functionality elements to the park over the next several seasons. The next planned installation will be custom benches that will pay homage to the art deco ceiling found in the former Bloomsburg Moose. Bench sponsorships available starting at $2,130.
The ribbon cutting marks the culmination of years of planning and community collaboration, and marks a new chapter in reimagining public spaces in Columbia County.
All are welcome to attend.
