When punk first exploded as a counter-cultural movement in the mid-1970s, the music was loud, fast, angry, and raw. This exhibit focuses on the visual aesthetics of punk in posters, concert flyers, LPs and 45s, underground zines, photos, buttons and other cultural ephemera. Seeking a space to present new political art, artists formed the Alternative Museum in New York in 1975. Like the museum, these prints by participating artists address social and humanitarian issues in their imagery that still resonate in today’s cultural landscape.
