When punk first exploded as a counter-cultural movement in the mid-1970s, the music was loud, fast, angry, and raw. This exhibit focuses on the visual aesthetics of punk in posters, concert flyers, LPs and 45s, underground zines, photos, buttons and other cultural ephemera. The Guerrilla Girls are feminist activist artists who use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose gender and ethnic bias in politics, art, film, and pop culture. They wear gorilla masks in public to protect their anonymity; they could be anyone and they are everywhere.
Seeking a space to present new political art, artists formed the Alternative Museum in New York in 1975. Like the museum, these prints by participating artists address social and humanitarian issues in their imagery that still resonate in today’s cultural landscape.
