Winter Sowing

January 8 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

January is here! Now is the time when we may start thinking about spring, or maybe we are looking for some fun projects for the winter months.

The Fishing Creek Watershed Association will be meeting on January 8, 2024, at 7 PM, and the presentation will be “Winter Sowing”. If you have interest in growing some plants, native or otherwise, or in learning more, please join us.

Our presenter will be our own Dr. Jennifer Whisner. She teaches in the Department of Environmental, Geographical and Geological Sciences at Commonwealth University’s Bloomsburg campus. She developed a green thumb even before she fell in love with rocks, helping out with mulching, weeding, and sampling raspberries in her parents’ garden. She now shares that enjoyment with others through the Penn State Master Gardener Program.

Many native annuals and perennials rely on cold temperatures over the winter to break dormancy. In this workshop, we will make like Mother Nature and sow winter-friendly seeds in containers and leave outside until spring. We will provide supplies (scissors, potting soil, markers, some jugs, and some seeds that should benefit from the cold and moisture in the containers) but please feel free to bring your own if you have favorite seeds or extra empty (clean) gallon milk jugs!

To register, please contact Beth Gensemer: beth.gensemer@columbiaccd.org before 3 PM on January 8. There will be no Zoom for this meeting.
