Photo Contest Winners Announced!

The Columbia-Montour Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce this year’s Covered Bridge Photo Contest winners.

The overall winning image will be featured as the 2017 Covered Bridge Puzzle. This year’s puzzle will be released in the fall as the seventh installment in the Visitors Bureau’s limited edition series, and will feature the Josiah Hess Bridge for the first time.

Bob Erlsten’s snapshot of the Josiah Hess Bridge in Columbia County was selected as the overall winner. Bob is a lifelong resident of the area who lives in rural Montour County with his wife and several four-legged companions. An avid outdoorsman, Bob enjoys nature photography with a focus on wildlife and landscapes. He has photographed all of the covered bridges in Columbia and Montour Counties at one time or another with the Josiah Hess Bridge being ones of his favorites.

Several other photographers were recognized in this year’s contest: Margie Hunsinger submitted the 2nd place photograph, Kim Jo Hess was awarded 3rd place, and Brandy Whitenight and Julie Jones received honorable mentions.  The Visitors Bureau would like to thank everyone who submitted photos for the contest, as there were a record number of submitted photos this year.

There are still very limited quantities of the Keefer Mills, Esther Furnace, and Stillwater Bridge puzzles available for sale prior to the release of this year’s puzzle as part of the collector’s edition series. These puzzles may be purchased at the Visitors Bureau Welcome Center, 121 Papermill Road in Bloomsburg.  The Visitors Bureau will also have the 2017 Josiah Hess puzzles for sale at their Bloomsburg Fair booth this year as well as at the Covered Bridge and Arts Festival (October 5-8 at Knoebels Amusement Resort).  A limited quantity of only 250 puzzles are available on a first come, first serve basis. The Visitors Bureau’s covered bridge puzzles are collector’s items and make for a great birthday or Christmas present.

The Visitors Bureau is currently taking pre-orders for the 2017 Josiah Hess puzzles – cost is $12, tax included. A donation of $2 from every puzzle sold will be made by the Bureau to the Columbia County Covered Bridge Association to go toward restoration and preservation of our local covered bridge treasures.

Shane Kiefer, Director of Marketing for the Columbia-Montour Visitors Bureau, states that “for the last six years, the Visitors Bureau has made a donation from the puzzle sales to the Covered Bridge Society.

We hope that by continuing this tradition for another year, we are helping to preserve and restore these bridges for everyone in Columbia and Montour Counties to enjoy and cherish, as well as the many thousands of people from around the world who visit them each year.”

The Columbia County Covered Bridge Association restores, preserves, and advocates for the covered bridges of Columbia County for historical and recreational purposes. Their purpose is simple: they recognized the historic importance of the covered bridges as a public treasure to be available to and enjoyed by the public and the important part they play in tourism. This non-profit association protects all of our covered bridges not only for today, but also for future generations.

Children’s Museum Gets Fresh Look

The Children’s Museum, 2 West Seventh Street, Bloomsburg is excited to reveal its new logo. The logo was revealed at a breakfast for members, donors, and key stakeholders on Saturday, June 10.

Founded thirty-three years ago in May 1984, the original Children’s Museum’s logo was designed in the 1990s. Cindi Harper Hron, a professor at Penn College of Technology, challenged her students to design an appropriate logo for the Museum.  The designs of the semi-finalists were submitted to the Children’s Museum and the final design was selected.

Shawna Meiser, Director of the Museum says, “The previous logo served us well for many decades. As our programs, services, and constituents have expanded, so should our visual identity. We are proud to serve a wide range of children, from infant through high school and this new logo represents that broad appeal.”

The Children’s Museum’s Marketing Committee worked with a small focus group to brainstorm specific design elements that should be incorporated into the new logo, as well as colors. The new logo, designed by freelance graphic designer Adrienne Beaver of Middleburg, features three children reaching for a lightbulb that erupts into a flurry of activity – gears, art splats, leaves, bubbles and stars are all represented in the experiential logo.

Kathy Beidler, Chair of the Museum’s Marketing Committee and Board secretary says, “The new logo is bright, engaging, and communicates the emphasis that our Museum has on hands-on learning, including science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math – all areas that are critical to the success of children of all ages.”

The Children’s Museum is a non-profit organization with a mission to enrich the lives of people in the 10-county region by fostering a lifelong love of learning through interactive programs and exhibits that bring out the imagination in every child and the child in every visitor. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Summer Canoe & Brews Scheduled

Looking for a memorable experience this summer?  Check out several upcoming “Canoe & Brew” events that combine the best of craft brews and outdoor recreation!

Canoe and Brew is a just-for-fun event coordinated by a group dedicated paddlers who love the river, the outdoors, and beer.  It is not a fundraiser, nor does it benefit any one group.  The group is content to drink beer and build local communities through supporting local, independently-owned industry, such as breweries and river outfitters.

This year’s first event is coming up on June 3rd-4th.  This weekend extravaganza starts at the Berwick Test Track Park at the kayak launch and ends at Susquehanna Outdoor Adventures’ private island in the middle of the Susquehanna River.  Several treehouses on the island are up for grabs at the end of the day, and the rest of the group will be able to stay in tents and sleeping bags on the peaceful banks of the river.  There will be live music, barbeque prepared on the island, and fantastic brews boated in directly from Turkey Hill Brewing Company.

Pricing is as follows: $15 per head for the shuttle (beginning of the day at Susquehanna Outdoor Adventures to the launch site), including your boat. Boat rentals are $25 per head – that’s $25 for a single kayak, $50 for a double, including shuttle.  Kids riding in a canoe with their parents are free.

Visit www.canoeandbrew.com for more details or to register.  Spots are limited and will go quickly, so grab them soon.

Additional Canoe & Brew Events

July 9th, 2017: Old Forge Brewing Co.
