At many Vernal School programs, women have often mentioned how much they would love to participate in more outdoor recreation, but do not have the skills or ability.
As children, our gender roles and social expectations direct us towards learning a certain skillset, and at the same time, they discourage us from learning skills that are “not meant for girls”. So, we may not have had the opportunity to learn hiking, camping and fishing skills, because we were directed more towards traditional female roles.
Overcoming these barriers is why we have decided to create “Women Re-Connecting and Engaging with Nature Program”, or as we refer to it the “WREN” program.
This program, led by women, will teach women and girls the skills they need to enjoy nature and the outdoors. We seek to offer a comfortable setting where participants are open to asking questions and learning new skills without any concerns.
Monthly programs will focus on hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking and basic outdoor skills. Topics can be added or adjusted based off the needs of the group. We hope to be able to participate in a few trips to put these skills to use in real world situations.
Our first program will meet Sunday March 24th at 1 p.m. in the auditorium of the Environmental Education Center of Montour Preserve. During the first meeting we will go over introductions and simple day hike basics and Leave No Trace principles.
If you have children, please feel free to bring them. We will set up an activity they can participate in while we meet.If you are a woman with a skillset you would like to share, please join us!
