In Opposition

The Exchange Gallery invited artists to make work on the theme of “opposition”: This moment in American culture seems to be dominated by oppositional ideas.  People are certain that their ideas are correct, while in complete contradiction to others in their community.

We asked each artist to make two pieces, or an artist could team up with someone else to between them make two pieces, and the pair would demonstrate some kind of opposition.  The contrast could be conceptual, political, or formal; it could be as simple as complementary colors or as complicated as political disagreements.  As always we encouraged work by artists of ALL ages and levels of experience.

For the most part, one side of the gallery displays one piece, and on the opposite wall we hung the oppositional piece.  The viewer can stand between the two ideas, picking a side – or not.

“In Opposition” includes more than fifty 2-D and 3-D pieces by twenty-seven artists: Bloomsburg University art professors, students, and graduates; it has work by some longtime exhibitors and some first-time exhibitors (including four Mifflinburg High School students); and the show includes work by two four-year-olds and a five-year-old — the four-year-olds now each with work in their third shows here, the five-year-old with work in his first.
