Irish playwright, critic, and political activist George Bernard Shaw said “Imitation is not just the sincerest form of flattery – it’s the sincerest form of learning.” Artists copy each other’s work all of the time — sometimes literal copies, sometimes interpretations. We asked artists to show their literal copy or interpretation of another piece of art, 2-D or 3-D, in any medium. For example, paint an accurate reproduction of The Starry Night, or re-create it in bottlecaps glued to a piece of cardboard. Nightthawks in Lego? Already done once! Any piece, famous or obscure, could serve as the starting point.
